Today I’m sharing how to make a DIY Farmhouse Style Rolling Kitchen Island. This is the perfect way to keep my snacks like Campbell’s Well Yes!™ Soup in an organized place. I’m so glad that Walmart is within walking distance of my home because it is so convenient to be able to grab a soup whenever I’m craving a hearty bite to eat.
If you are anything like me then you are going to love these soups because they contain no artificial colors, flavors or ingredients. But guess what, the chicken is raised with NO antibiotics which means that I am totally winning!! In my effort be more organized this New Year I’ve been focusing on meal prep and it all starts with being more organized in the kitchen.
It’s never been easier to take an old bookcase, TV stand or small dresser and turn it into the island of your dreams. The “New Me” this year is all about being organized while incorporating nutritious meal pairings in the kitchen and it’s starting with my new island.
A great way to store and easily access Campbell’s Well Yes!™ soups is to expose the shelving by removing the doors. Doing this allows me to go from hungry to satisfied very quickly when prepping my food on the butcher block counter top.
I chose to use a butcher block counter top because it makes chopping veggies for a salad a breeze. I enjoy pairing a nice salad with a warm bowl of Campbell’s Well Yes!™ soup. The Roasted Chicken with Wild Rice Soup is one of my favorites. It’s super yummy and loaded with carrots, corn and sweet potatoes. The chicken meat has no preservatives or antibiotics, can you say mmm?
The Hearty Tomato with Roasted Barley is another one of my favorites. Do you love red peppers & garlic? Well this savory soup has about 3/4 cup of veggies and also contains no preservatives; once again, I’m totally winning haha!
The only thing better than indulging in a warm bowl of soup is knowing that I only paid a couple of dollars for it. Walmart is known for their low prices and they never disappoint.
Let me share with you how to make to the island.
Gather Your Supplies.
- Cabinet, bookshelf or dresser of your choice
- Butcher block counter top (the size will vary based on the size of your furniture).
- Drill and a 3/8′ bit
- 4 rolling wheels
- Polyurethane spray
- White furniture spray paint
- Sandpaper (60 grit and 100 grit)
- Small hand sander
- Wood Glue
Step 1. Remove the doors, shelf, and shelf brackets.
Step 2. Turn the cabinet upside down. Drill holes in each of the legs for the wheels. Use a 3/8′ bit and drill the hole 1 1/2′ deep. Do not attach wheels at this time (we do not want to accidentally spray paint the wheels).
Step 3. Spray paint the bottom of the cabinet and tough to reach areas that you can only access if the cabinet is upside down. Once it has dried, flip it over and complete the painting job.
Step 4. While the island is drying, prep the butcher block by sanding one side of the butcher block with a 60 grit sandpaper (this will allow the countertop to adhere to the cabinet easier). Flip it over and sand the other side with with 150 grit sandpaper until it is smooth. Be sure to sand and round the sharp edges. This will be the top of your island.
Step 5. Wipe it clean and spray 1-2 coats of polyurethane onto the butcher block. You may need to let it dry inbetween coats.
Step 6. Squeeze the wood glue onto the top of the cabinet to adhere the butcher block to the cabinet.
Step 7. When you are ready, turn the table over. Use a hammer to gently tap in the wheel socket.
Push the wheel rob into the socket until it locks into place. Turn the cabinet over and you’re done.
Now you have a beautiful bar that is ready to be stocked and organized with your kitchen favorites.
